Exceptional fauna and flora

Despite a land mass that is 20 times smaller than that of France, New Caledonia hosts nearly as many land plant species. 3 261 vascular plant species can be counted today, of which 76% are endemic. This figure places New Caledonia third in the world in terms of endemism, behind Hawaii (89%) and New Zealand (82%).

Exceptional fauna and flora
Terrestrial fauna originally contained no mammals, the only representatives of this group being chiroptera (fruit bats and other bats) which arrived by air.
The huge variety of reefs and habitats (such as sea grass, algae and mangroves) provides the archipelago with a remarkable marine biodiversity within a relatively small area.
