The Niaouli Savannah

Comprised of trees and bushes disseminated in a large herbaceous strata, it’s the typical landscape of the west coast north of the Grande Terre.

The Niaouli Savannah
The Niaouli savannah constitutes a privileged environment for rearing cattle, the emblematic agricultural activity of the West coast. This anthropic ecosystem, poor in biodiversity, results in the disappearance of plants of origin under pressure from humans (forest clearance, rearing animals, and fires). Niaouli is particularly favoured by fire, as it possesses fire-retardant properties with its bark with multiple layers which enables it to survive and to colonize after the passage of fire the room left free by the other species which are destroyed by fires.
