The dense "sempervirente" rainforest

The dense rainforest is called "sempervirente" or "evergreen" because the trees for the most part at higher levels do not lose their leaves in the dry season.

Exceptional flora and fauna

The dense "sempervirente" rainforest
It stretches in a discontinuous way from south to north, the length of the central chain, and occupies 20 % (4,000 km2) of the surface of the Grande Terre. It is also found in calcium soil in the Loyalty Islands. These forests, with over 80 % of endemic species, house a multitude of animals (birds, insects, reptiles…) unique in the world.

The arborescent fern (Cyathea intermedia) present in the rainforest, is one of the largest ferns in the world, it can measure up to 35 metres high. Its trunk, very solid, is used for sculpture, it is also used to make assegai points (arrows). The arborescent fern is also used in traditional medicine.
